Congratulations to our Students of the Month for May 2007! Serena Lane and Jordan Yazzie maintained their focus and positive attitude to the end of the school year to become the final students recognized with this honor for the 2006-2007 academic year! Great job!
Serena Lane, daughter of Selina Slim, Tonalea, AZ, is a Freshman at South Sevier High School. Serena has had a very solid academic performance throughout the year, and is very enthusiastic about Richfield Residential Hall. “I like everything about it here, the activities, the friends, the extra education,” says Serena. Serena mentioned how much she enjoys all of the trips we take together and all of the great friends that she has made this year. In Serena’s words, “This has been a kick-butt year!” Congratulations, Serena! Have a great summer!

Jordan Yazzie, also a South Sevier Ram, is a Sophomore from Kayenta, AZ., and is the son of Marian Yazzie. The staff at RRH indicate that they enjoy Jordan’s positive attitude and work ethic. Richfield High School Senior, Mario Herrera presents Mr. Keisel with a ram and a wildcat that he made in his Advanced Arc Welding class at Snow College. Mario, who has been a student in the welding department at Snow College for the past two years, approached his instructors earlier this year and indicated that he would like to do something that he could leave with Richfield Residential Hall to express his appreciation for the continuous support he has received throughout his high school experience. After completing his required coursework early, Mario decided to learn how to use the new plasma cutter to create this project. Snow College Welding Department Chair, Alan Palmer, said, “He learned the machine very quickly, and has done a great job with it. After completing these pieces, he did a few projects for us.” Amazingly, all of the time and effort that went into this project was after his regular curriculum was completed. Rather than relax and ride out the remainder of his senior year, Mario took the time to learn a new machine, become proficient in it, and make something with it to express his appreciation to the program that has provided him so many opportunities. This attitude and passion for learning and service to others exemplifies the best of Richfield Residential Hall. Given that fact, it is not surprising that Mario was selected as Student of the Month for April!

These beautifully framed pieces of metal will be displayed with pride in the common areas of Richfield Residential Hall to illustrate to generations of students what is available to them here in Richfield. Special thanks to Snow Colleges Welding Department, Commercial Art Department (for airbrushing the pieces), and Collision Repair Department (for clear coating the pieces). Thanks Mario, and good luck!

Josh Harvey, a junior from Page, AZ, displays artwork that he painted to support school spirit here at RRH. A talented artist, Josh has taken several art classes, to include Commercial Arts at Snow College. Josh completed these paintings on his own time and presented them to the program as a gift. The paintings will be framed and hung in the RRH Dining Room where students from each high school will be able to enjoy a meal under the watchful eye of their mascots. Thanks Josh! Okay, okay…. Josh did not act alone! Natasha Sloan and Leon Jackson helped, too!

Congratulations to our Students of the Month for April 2007! This is a difficult honor to attain, but your hard work and perseverance have paid off. Did we mention that the students of the month get to go out and eat at a restaurant of their choice with staff? This month…. South China Cafe! Oh yeah, pot stickers and egg rolls, Baby! Hope it was good Mario and Letasha!

Mario Herrera is the son of Tabitha Begay of Window Rock, Arizona. A senior at Richfield High School, Mario has been a student of Richfield Residential Hall for all four years of high school. He says he has really enjoyed all that the program has had to offer him. He plans on remaining in Richfield to work for the BLM over the summer by being a part of the camp crew for the wildland fire fighters (a job he had last summer as well). Following his summer job, Mario plans to study Psychology at Weber State University in Ogden, Utah. With all of the hard work and dedication you have shown here, we know you will be successful anywhere you go!

Letasha Tsosie is in her second year at Richfield Residential Hall, and is obviously doing very well here. She says that she really likes being a student here, and that it is helping to prepare her for college. Following high school, Letasha plans on attending college in Oregon with the goal of becoming a Pediatrician. Letasha is the daughter of Wilson Tsosie and Selena Bedonie of Parachute, Colorado.
