Fun on Wheels!

Thursday, March 25th, 2010

Richfield Residential Hall students had no school on Friday, March 19th. To celebrate our freedom, staff scheduled a roller skating activity at Midstate Skates in nearby Elsinore, Utah.  Students were up early and completed all details and chores with a great attitude well before the bus arrived at 9:30. All students and several staff participated in this fun activity. We booked a private party and had the whole facility to ourselves for a couple of hours. It was a blast!

Mr. Laws said, “The majority of the kids were hesitant due to the fact that they had never skated before, but most of them faced their fears and strapped on a pair of skates or roller blades anyway. Some of the  kids took right off and did not have a problem.  Some of the kids are fast learners and got the hang of it really quickly.  Everyone was laughing and having a good time! Even those that struggled were smiling.”

Midstate Skates had something for everyone. There were skate, roller-blades,  and even scooters for those who did not feel comfortable on skates. Several students sat in booths and enjoyed some concessions while watching their friends skate. Even Mr. Laws, Mr. Workman, and Mrs. Taylor got out there and skated with the students!

According to Mr. Laws, “The best part about this activity was that those who knew how to skate helped the ones struggling and it looked like one big family.” Thanks to all who did so much to make this activity happen.

Go Badgers!

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

On Friday the 19th of March the Snow College Rugby Team started their end of season division playoffs. Brandon Sanderson, Shane Sanderson, and Shaun Todacheenie were able to attend the tournament at Utah Valley University.   RRH Staff, Mark Laws said, “We arrived early enough to watch a match between Idaho State and Utah State University.  The boys did not know what to expect.  They envisioned a game similar to American Football.  After a few minutes into the contest the boys realized that they were wrong; it’s a lot rougher and their are no pads or helmets for protection. They had never seen anything like it!  All of the students were wide eyed with mouths open and a big grin after the punishing hits and grueling runs to advance the ball.” In case you haven’t seen a rugby match, here are some great pics of the Badgers in action!

Brandon Sanderson was so impressed with the experience that he said,  “this is something that

I would like to try next year, if I attend Snow College.”  The boys were able to watch as the Snow College Badgers easily beat Southern Utah University. To make it even more exciting, Mr. Laws was able to get the boys on the field to meet some of the players. Brandon, Shane, and Shaun were able to shake hands and talk with the team, including Mr. Laws son, Stetson who is a key player for the Badgers.  The team said thank you for coming and they will be looking forward to Brandon Sanderson’s participation, on next seasons club!

The Badgers went on to take the Division Title as they beat Utah Valley University  in the championship. According to Mr. Laws, “The young men enjoyed this experience and were grateful for this opportunity to experience something so new and exciting.”

Senior Strike

Thursday, March 18th, 2010

On Saturday, March 13th, the Senior Class of 2010, planned and carried out a bowling activity that was a roaring success! Thirty students participated and had a BLAST! They each bowled 2 games and when the “dust settled”, the top boy and girl winners were Shawn Todecheenie with a score of 163 and Lucy Slick with a score of 84. Great job seniors!

Crown Dancers

Monday, March 8th, 2010

On Thursday, March 4th, six of our RRH boys performed the Apache Crown Dance for Mr. Workman’s son’s Boy’s Scout “Arrow of Light” ceremony. The dancers were: Devonte Charlie, Fabeian Toledo, Kerwin Chee, Channon Yazzie, Tyrone Nez, and Alex Ketchum, including two son’s of our dorm staff who were Zachery Taylor (10 yrs. old) son of Ouida & Jason Taylor and Stetson Laws, son of Mark Laws. The boy’s did an awesome job entertaining the crowd and they received many nice compliments! During the dance, Channon Yazzie who was our clown had our staff Rose Janec and Georgie Craig dance with him. Our staff can dance WOW! We would like to thank Mr. Workman for giving us this opportunity to share our culture with the community. A special thanks also goes out to Mr. Laws & Mr. Taylor for helping Mrs. Taylor with the making of the crowns and costumes. We would like our boys to know how proud we are of them! We didn’t have to beg them to dance; they were willing and able to do it. They really enjoyed themselves and even helped put up chairs & clean after the ceremony. Thank you again to our boys, you were awesome!

FFA Sweet Heart

Friday, March 5th, 2010

Junior, Shaquira Begay, participated in the Future Farmer’s of America Sweet Heart pageant at South Sevier High School on March 4th. For her talent, she did the fancy shawl dance and in the evening gown competition, she wore a beautiful Navajo rug dress. Also, as part of the pageant, each contestant made a cake that was auctioned off by a professional auctioneer, which made this portion of the competition alot of fun for the students. Shaquira’s cake was purchased for $41. In the crowning ceremony, Shaquira was named second attendant. Congratulations Shaquira!
