RRH Grad earns Chief Manuelito Scholarship!

2012 Richfield Residential Hall graduate, Lucy Slick was honored as one of only 83 recipients of the coveted and highly competitive Chief Manuelito Scholarship at a banquet in Farmington, NM.

According to Mr. Workman, Executive Director of RRH, “Lucy Slick is committed to education and personal growth in a way that few others will ever know. At the young age of 14, she left her home and all that was familiar in Shonto, Arizona in a quest to better herself through education. After studying a wide range of educational options, Lucy decided that Richfield Residential Hall was the best fit for her.”

“Lucy arrived at Richfield Residential Hall just a few short days before her Freshman year was scheduled to begin. Instead of parents and siblings, she found herself with 100 other teens from a wide variety of backgrounds. She had to adjust to a new environment, new people and a new way of life. Rather than becoming overwhelmed at the myriad of cultures she encountered at Richfield High School, she quickly made many new friends and became an ambassador of the Navajo people to the citizens of her new community.”

“Lucy challenges herself in the classroom with advanced placement and concurrent enrollment classes in every subject. Despite her challenging schedule, Lucy’s 3.969 GPA placed her in the top 10 of her class of 107 students.  Due to her exemplary academic performance and leadership ability, Lucy was hired as a peer tutor at Richfield Residential Hall. She was instrumental in increasing the overall mathematical performance of the entire Richfield Residential Hall studentbody, and she aided several students in improving their individual academic performance through her one-on-one attention.”

“Lucy is one of those rare students who is committed to and focused on a positive future. She strives to do those things that will allow her to get a good education and return to serve her people on the Navajo Nation. Lucy made the sacrifice to leave her home at age 14 to attend our advanced high school program, and she has been a leader in every way since she arrived here four years ago. Her talents extend well beyond the classroom as she has excelled in the Richfield High School drama and math teams and been an active member of the Richfield High School chapter of the National Honor Society. Lucy is a service oriented young woman who has served as a judge in the Richfield City Youth Court and she has been a member of the Governor’s Youth Council for the past two years. She has also served on the Richfield Residential Hall Student Council.”

Lucy plans to continue her education at Utah State University in Logan, Utah.

Congratulations, Lucy! We are all so proud of you.
